What is one of the best palm plants for removing indoor air pollution?  

Baby Date Palm is on the top of the list for removing toxins from our indoor environment.

Carbon Dioxide is essential for plant growth. How much is normal?  Can it be depleted? Where does it come from?

Carbon dioxide is absolutely necessary for photosynthesis. It makes up about 1 percent of the air we breath or about 300 parts per million is normal.  Everything living produces it as well as decomposing matter like compost.  Early greenhouse plant producers learned that decomposing manure in the greenhouse led to better plant production.  A sealed greenhouse will actually be depleted of this resource especially in winter which will lead to as much as a 70 percent drop in plant production.

What is the oldest cultivated plant?

It is widely believed that the gourd is the oldest cultivated plant. According to Ginger Summit and Jim Widess who each co-wrote the book “Gourd Craft,”  the gourd is believed to be one of nature’s greatest gifts to mankind, and cultivated throughout prehistory and throughout the world. Some of the oldest gourd fragments and seeds that have been recovered were in Peru dating from as far back as 10,000 B.C.

The Zinnia, named after Johann Goftfried Zinn in the 1700’s, is a member of what common family of flowers?  Can you guess it?

The Zinnia belongs to the Daisy Family Asteraceae that has over 20,000 species.

What is the largest known seed?

The coco de mer of the Seychelles produces the largest seeds. Each seed measures approximately 20 inches or 50 cm long and take up to six years to develop.

How far back can the drinking of tea be traced to?

Tea drinking can be traced to as far back as 50 BC to the Southern part of China.  Although it was surely used long before that not only as a drink but for medicinal use as well.
