Tart Date

    

Tamarindus indica   A tree grown from ancient times with a crown of graceful dome-like leaves. This is a very long-lived tree known to still be producing well after 200 years. Tart fruit pods follow yellow, three-petal blossoms that occur in summer. Tamarind is one of the oldest species used in bonsai culture bonsai in Indonesia.

The tree is moderately salt tolerant and can be grown in some coastal locations. Mature trees can withstand 22 degree temperature for brief periods. Can be grown outdoors in zones 9-11    Item # rsd - 78

Sowing instructions:

  • Soak in warm water for 24 hours

  • Sow seed 3/4” deep at a soil temperature of  55-65° F. and keep moist

  • Sow in standard good draining potting mix

Plant Care:

  • Grow in a standard potting mix

  • Likes a deep, rich well fertilized soil

  • Keep moist and feed once a month

  • Transplant when large enough to handle into pots

  •  Keep humid if in dry conditions by occasional misting

  • Likes full sun
