Black River Birch

Betula nigra - This North American Native is grown as a specimen plant and is perfect for planting  in high water areas.  River birch tolerates low oxygen soil in flooded areas as well as clay soil.  It needs moist conditions but will tolerate a well drained soil if given adequate moisture.  The tree is very hardy and grows rapidly. It is the only American birch that fruits in the spring. 

Tree trunks start out white when young and will darken with furrows with age. Grown as a specimen plant at estates, golf courses and homes and as an erosion control along river banks, as well as ornamental use.  Grows 30-60 feet.  Because of the unique bark form this tree can be used in bonsai culture if given the required pruning.

Sowing instructions: Soak seed overnight. Sow seed at 55-64 degrees F in standard good draining potting mix.  Be patient with germination. Provide bottom heat and light for faster germination.

Plant Care: Grow in zones 4-9  Keep soil moist and feed once a month. Transplant when large enough to handle into pots. Keep humid if in dry conditions by occasional misting.
