Bauhinia monandra

Butterfly Flower  Also known as Pink Orchid Tree or St. Thomas Tree and is native to Burma. Unusual Butterfly shaped leaves split in two equal parts represent the relationship of brothers. Beautiful pink flowers bloom to about 4” across from March or April, followed by thick 9” seedpods.  You will love this stunning Tropical! for standard growing zones 9b or higher, otherwise grow as a greenhouse or tropical houseplant!

Sowing instructions:

  • Soak the seed in warm water for 24 hours

  • Sow seed 1/4” deep at a soil temperature of at least 61° F and keep moist

  • Sow in standard good draining potting mix

Plant Care:

  • Grow in a standard potting mix

  • Likes a deep, rich acidic, well fertilized soil

  • Keep moist and feed once a month

  • Transplant when large enough to handle into pots

  • Keep humid if in dry conditions by occasional misting

  • Water sparingly through dormancy or winter months

  • Do not allow to reach temperatures below 47° F

  • The genus was named in honor of sixteenth-seventeenth century Swiss botanist brothers Jean and Gaspard Bauhin

  • The paired leaf lobes represent a brotherly relationship
