Onion Walla Walla

OP   Its hard to imagine a better onion packed with taste, size and quality! This large onion is celebrated for being ultra mild and  juicy sweet. It originated in the fertile Walla Walla valley in Washington where it is still widely grown and sold. One of the juiciest and sweetest onions you will ever grow!   Grows up to 4"  This is a long day plant

Sowing instructions:

Sow seed directly in well drained location, in a light sandy soil, 4 weeks before last spring frost or start indoors in a good draining potting mix indoors 8 weeks before planting outside. Germination results in 6-12 days at a soil temperature of 55-75 degrees F.  Soil temperature should be at least 55 degrees F if planting outdoors.

Plant Care: For the biggest yields place plants in raised composted beds.  Water regularly. After harvest cure in the sun for several days

Growing Tips:

  • Keep plants well watered
  • Maximize production by harvesting fruits regularly
  • Seed can be sown indoors 8 weeks before last frost date
  • Sow outdoors after last frost and when soil temperature reaches at least 55°

Fun Facts:

  • Onions have been consumed since around 5000 BC possibly being cultivated as a crop by 3000 BC in Egypt
  • Onions were placed in Egyptian burials
  • It was thought the strong odor would bring the breath back to the dead
  • Roman gladiators were rubbed down with onion oil for their muscles
