Monkey’s Comb

Apeiba aspera  A lovely ornamental you will enjoy growing! Yellow, heavily scented flowers are followed by interesting fruits that resemble sea urchins about 2” in diameter. These black fruits are covered with soft, short spines. Folk lore has it that these spiny fruit pods are used by monkeys as a comb. Easily grown indoors in containers for non tropical climates if offered adequate light and warmth.  Zones 10 -11 for outdoors.

Sowing instructions:

  • Soak the seed in warm water for 24 hours

  • Sow seed at the top of soil and lightly cover

  • Keep at a soil temperature of at least 65- 70° F and keep moist

  • Sow in standard good draining potting mix

Plant Care:

  • Grow in a standard potting mix

  • Likes a deep, rich well fertilized soil

  • Keep moist and feed once a month

  • Transplant when large enough to handle into pots

  • Keep humid if in dry conditions by occasional misting

  • Water sparingly through dormancy or winter months

  • Do not allow plant to reach temperatures below 45° F

  • The light weight wood is used for boxes or floats

  • The small seeds are processed and used as a polish or made into a skin care product

  • Myth has it that monkeys use the seed pods as a comb
