Purple Vienna

Purple Vienna - This beautifully colored vegetable tastes as good as it looks. The plants grow to about 10" tall, with purple-green leaf and stem. Bulbs are purple skinned with white flesh. They taste best when used at 2" diameter.  This is a standard variety used by home and market gardeners. Maturity in 60 Days. A crisp, mildly sweet variety.   Item # ss - 01     Open Pollinated!

Sowing instructions:  Start indoors in a good draining potting mix indoors 6-8 weeks before planting outside. Let outside temperatures reach at least 30° F. Or Direct Sow outdoors after danger of frost has past. Germination results in 6-12 days at a soil temperature of 70-90 degrees F.  Optimum soil temperature should be at least 68-85° F.

Plant Care: Harden off and set out after all danger of frost is past in a nice sunny spot.  For the biggest yields place plants in raised composted beds.  Water regularly. 

Growing Tips:

  • Keep plants well watered
  • Maximize production by harvesting fruits regularly
  • Seed can be sown indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date
  • Sow outdoors after last frost and when soil temperature reaches at least 68°

  • Enjoy freshly sliced or in salads or sauté in Oriental style dishes

Growing Tips:

  • Sow in early spring
  • Sow at 1/2" deep.
  • Thin seedlings to 6" apart.
  • Keep moist and cool to prevent bolting.
  • Successive plantings recommended 3 weeks apart.
  • Can be started indoors.

Uses:

  • Fry lightly in batter or breadcrumbs for Kohl Rabi cakes.
  • Slice and use in dips.
  • Add to salads.
