Kangaroo Apple

Solanum laciniatum Kangaroo Apple is a medium-sized shrub with  large, glossy, dark green lobed leaves and clusters of violet flowers. The oval shaped fruits start out pale green and change to  yellow then on to orange and red as they ripen.  Fruit is not edible.

The plant produces two types of foliage. A  large lance-shaped or irregularly lobed young leaves and smaller  lance-shaped adult leaves.   This is an easy and fast grower and will flower within the first two years of growth, after which the plant should be pruned to prevent a straggly appearance.  Sow at 64-70° F.  Grow plants in full light, water freely and feed once a month.  Item # rsd - 174

  • Native of eastern Australia

  • Closely related S. aviculare that occurs in temperate regions of New South Wales

  • laciniatum  is from the Latin, lacinia, meaning a lappet or flap of a garment, referring to the lobed leaves 

  • Fruit is dark green to orange

  • Makes an excellent plant for collectors of plants for the home or greenhouse environment
