All About the Garden

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a place without one green plant growing anywhere?  Even if you live in an apartment or condo the grounds need to be maintained, trees need to be to pruned and the grass has to be cut.  Even though you usually get to watch someone else do this work, some form of garden exists.

Of course there may be the exception to the rule in some desert someplace, where all things are shades of brown and reds and hard, baked earth is the front yard.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  There is a place for everything, and besides, some people like rocks growing in the front yard.  But, what really is a garden anyway?

Traditional thinking has it that a garden is carrots, corn and the family’s favorite vegetables and many gardens start right there in the vegetable garden.  Truly this is a good place to start, but if you found yourself with dirt on your hands and you loved the fresh smell of the soil in springtime, you will find your mind wandering off and creating new plots to conquer.

But what should be planted?  More vegetables? Your freezer will already be brimming over with the summers bounty and your neighbors never seem to be home anymore when you want to surprise them with more zucchini squash.

Well, a garden can be many things and your imagination is the only limit.  Picture in your mind that flower garden you always wanted.  There are thousands of different flowers.  You could plant annuals and perennials or both.  You could get exotic and plant things that nobody has heard of.  Tall flowers, short flowers, you better pick up a book on flowers and start your design.

There are specialty gardens you can create.  How about a small pond or fountain? Can you hear the water gently flowing into a quiet pool and disappearing beneath a cattail or papyrus?  You’ll need to add a lotus for color.

What about the deck?  The wood is fading with age and you find yourself wishing for a brighter place to relax.  You might have to start a few container gardens.  Add flowers and color and maybe some herbs to the pot, for cutting at the summer barbeque.

Of course there is the inside of the house to think about.   Tropical plants for color and greenery can be placed about in just the right place.  Maybe you need to let your creativity burst and grow topiary.  Or maybe you have the patience for a bonsai creation.  Or Seikei. The list is endless.

Have you become totally addicted to the gardening experience?  Then you must build a greenhouse and challenge yourself to this type of environment and grow to your hearts content.  Year round!

As you can see gardening is more than growing a few vegetables.  It is an experience that can enhance your life dramatically.  It is rewarding to plant a seed and watch it mature to an amazing plant and give back to you in ways you thought impossible.  It is exciting to plant a seedling and watch its life blossom into a colorful flower and be a part of the whole process.

So no matter where you live, be it, in an apartment, condo or house, you can create a garden almost anywhere and share in the processes of life.
