Garden Designs

There are a myriad of garden designs and choosing the perfect one for your garden can be a challenge. Some people feel trapped within the constraints of their landscape, but with some creative thinking and adaption, much can be accomplished with limited space and limited finances.

If you have limited space, the first thing you want to do is to create the illusion of depth. This can be accomplished by adding garden "rooms." This effect does not allow the viewer to see the complete garden at once. This creates intimacy and discovery. You can use hedges, walls or fences to create these rooms. Many people prefer to use trellises, because they allow light and air to move around the space.

Paths are important in garden designs because they naturally attract and misdirect the eye. A path where the end is out of sight will increase the perceived length of a garden. In a rectangle garden, place a path diagonally to have the longest possible line. One final piece of advice regarding spatial restrictions in garden designs is to soften your edges. If you have hard brick corners or fences, soften them with hanging shrubbery or foliage. Rounded, natural corners will do wonders for any garden.
