 Nancy Girl - Nance Tree

Byrsonima crassifolia Also known as Nance and Maricao cimun  - A slow growing shrub or tree that can grow to 45 feet tall in its natural habitat. Forming a spreading, rounded top and compact trunk that often grows crooked making it a unique and perfect specimen for bonsai culture as well as a most interesting houseplant. Bronze flowers poke through Jade-tinted leaves followed by round yellow fruit that taste much like a chestnut.

Flowers from March to June and fruits mature from May to October. The fruit is round, yellow, and at maturity the pulp is edible. Nance trees are well known for the fruit that is sold in bottles in South America. Bottled fruit stay fresh for several months and can be consumed directly or in refreshing drinks.

The crushed bark is toxic and is used as a fish poison and has some medicinal properties as well.

Nance is winter hardy in tropical zones 10 - 11 but can be easily grown indoors in colder climates if given warmth and bright light. Makes a unique conversation piece and striking houseplant! ! !  Germination sporadic. Can take one -9 months to germinate.

Sowing instructions:

  • Soak the seed in warm water for 24 hours

  • Sow seed 1/4” deep at a soil temperature of  65-70° F. and keep moist

  • Sow in standard good draining potting mix

Plant Care:

  • Grow in a standard potting mix

  • Likes a deep, rich well fertilized soil

  • Keep moist and feed once a month

  • Transplant when large enough to handle into pots

  • Keep humid if in dry conditions by occasional misting

  • Water sparingly through dormancy or winter months

  • Do not allow to reach temperatures below 40° F

  • Fruits are eaten raw or cooked as dessert

  • The fruits are often used to prepare carbonated beverages

  • The fruits are also used to make a fermented beverage known as chicha which is then  applied to various beer drinks 

  • In Costa Rica a rum liquor is made called Crema de nance

  • Fruits can also be used to dye cloth

  • Makes an excellent plant for collectors of plants for the home or greenhouse environment

  • Grown for the beautiful leaf shape and color

  • Makes an excellent specimen for Bonsai Culture

  Seedling - This seedling germinated in 6 weeks. But has been known to germinate even after 9 months from planting indoors.  Be patient.
